Think You Can Wait

When I saw this collaboration between The National and Sharon van Etten, I literally jumped out of my seat with such excitement. To see your favourite artists working together is just... awesome!

I got to know Sharon van Etten last year, through her new album "epic". Her songs are often beautifully written, but full of heartaches. For a period of time, I couldn't help but listen to her songs over and over again, although it gives me guilty conscious, like a love I had abandoned.

This song "Think You Can Wait" actually does sound more like a SvE's song, a slow-burn ballad, slowly and surely trying to sink your heart, with Matt Berninger's baritone voice singing "running a sleepless run,” “holding a goodnight gun,” “losing our ex-es one by one”.

Much like previous The National collaboration with St. Vincent, "Sleep All Summer", the choruses share the same theme: "I'll try/change, but I won't be a better person." Of course, this time The National is even more depressed. Though, Sharon's breathy voice perfectly fits the mood, I still wish Sharon could sing more, more than just backing vocal.

This song is featured in the soundtrack of Win Win. You can preview the movie while listening to the beautiful song. However, I think this song is all I really need.

I was drifting, crying
I was looking for an island
I was slipping under
I'll pull the devil down with me one way or another

I'm out of my mind
think you can wait?
I'm way off the line
think you can wait?

We've been running a sleepless run
been away from the baby way too long
we've been holding a good night gun
we've been losing out exes one-by-one

I'm out of my mind
think you can wait?
I'm way off the line
think you can wait

it out?
(all i have is all)
think you can wait it out?
(all i have is all)
think you can wait?

What I'm thinking is simple
I'll sell apples and ice water at the temple
I won't make trouble
I'll pull the devil down with me one way or another

We've been running a sleepless run
been away from the baby way too long
we've been holding a good night gun
we've been losing out exes one-by-one

I'll try
I'll try
But I couldn't be better
(all I have is all)

(repeat 3x)
