Sincerely Swedish Synthpop

I recently discovered Sincerely Yours' new band, jj. Fucking great!
They sound so "sincerely yours", which means awesome.
It's really hard to define genres these days.
So, I put together some songs that are alike.
They are all from Sweden, synthesized I think.
I love this music...
1. The Tough Alliance - Leg 1
2. jj - from africa to málaga
3. Air France - No Excuses
4. Boat Club - Memories
5. Most Valuable Players - You're All I Can Think Of
6. Tribeca - Black
7. The Radio Dept. - This Past Week
8. The Honeydrips - Fall From A Height
9. The Tough Alliance - 25 Years and Runnin'
10. The Legends - Play It For Today
11. The Sound of Arrows - M.A.G.I.C.
12. Club 8 - Missing You
13. jj - masterplan

Leopold and Loeb

They think they are Nietzschean supermen!
I think it's a very interesting story, to commit perfect crimes.
Perfect crimes sound so tempting...

They both are prodigys, finished university degrees around 19.
IQs are estimated 160, 200. And they ended up in jail.
because "the only crime a superman can make is to make a mistake."

Far out!

Read more about them.

Taking Woodstock

Le notti bianche (1957)

This is a sad sad and very very beautiful movie.
The crew actually reconstrcuted the town to film this exquisite movie.
I really like Marcello Mastroianni.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence

A King and a deckchair. Places to enjoy the silence.
Anton Corbijn can simply turn the idea into a beautiful music video.
The music was great, great piece of music. Needless to say.

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Cant you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Miles Fisher

Thank you Mr. Fisher, you made my night.
LESLIE - MILES is a great blog, lots of good photographs.

I never saw Superhero movie, but this is seriously funny.

Plus, he's got a new free EP out. Download.
He covered Talking Head's This Must Be The Place, which was great.
The music video is cool too.

Family Happiness

written by Leo Tolstoy

this is a heart-breaking story to read.
it came out in 1859, even before his marriage.
i think he understands a lot about marriage.
still, he had a fucked up family himself.
that's why writers write, right?
he just threw his ideals of happy life into the story.

he wrote it with such bitter frankness about love.
the conversations are just like the ones i had with her.
maybe it's very common among all couples whom have arguments.
there are endless misinterpretations between man & woman.
especially the part when the wife went into society.
i felt so moved reading that part.

from the story, i got a conclusion.
the husband is right about never say 'i love you'.
he shouldn't. he was a fool in love which he cannot help.
that's okay.
if you wanna keep a relationship, love is never enough.
love dies every second, every minute, every hour.

that's why we have the long tradition of marriage.
really, it's like a bond of two people. in order to survive from it.
we need to endure, learn, compromise, and accept
but i guess marriage doesn't really work nowadays...
not to even mention relationships... it dies quicker.

so what is happiness?
is happiness real only when shared?

Maybe You're Right

Now maybe you're right and maybe you're wrong
But I ain't gonna argue with you no more
I've done it for too long.
It was getting so good why then, where did it go?
I can't think about it no more tell me if you know.
You were loving me, I was loving you
But now there aint nothing but regretting
nothing, nothing but regretting everything we do.

I put up with your lies like you put up with mine,
But God knows we should have stopped somewhere,
we could have taken the time,
But time has turned, yes, some call it the end.
So tell me, tell me did you really love me like a friend?
You know you don't have to pretend,
It's all over now It'll never happen again, no no no,
it'll never happen again , it won't happen again
Never, never, never, it'll never happen again
No, no, no, no.....

So maybe you're right, and maybe you're wrong
But I ain't gonna argue with you no more
I've done it for too long.
It was getting so good why then, where did it go?
I can't think about it no more tell me if you know.
You were loving me, I was loving you
But now there aint nothing but regretting
nothing, nothing but regretting everything we do.

Contempt

Love is contempt.
This may as well be the best Godard's film about relationship.
I'm happy with the ending.
Though Bardot is an attractive woman, I can't (under)stand her.

It was a great great show. They are funny. Music is awesome.
Actually there are many songs that I want to videotape it.
I don't know why I didn't.
It's sad that this is my first and last time seeing them.

Unsatisfied

Cozy sunday afternoon, in my room. Broken.
Ever since I heard the song "Unsatisfied" from Adventreland, me and the song are destined to have a life-long relationship. So I clicked the song, it randomly picks out some other songs that perfectly fits my circumstances. I love my Mediamonkey. Damn right, I blink and she's gone.

1. The Replacements - Unsatisfied

Look me in the eye
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied

Was you satisfied?

Look me in the eye

Then, tell me that I'm satisfied

Hey, are you satisfied?

And it goes so slowly on

Everything I've ever wanted

Tell me what's wrong

Look me in the eye

And tell me that I'm satisfied
Were you satisfied?
Look me in the eye

Then, tell me I'm satisfied

And now are you satisfied?

Everything goes

Well, anything goes all of the time

Everything you dream of
Is right in front of you

And everything is a lie

Look me in the eye

And tell me that I'm satisfed

Look me in the eye

Unsatisfied
I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied I'm so dissatisfied I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied I'm so unsatisfied Well, I'm-a I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied I'm so dissatis,dissattis... I'm so

2. Morrissey - It's Not Your Birthday Anymore
It's not your birthday anymore
There's no need to be kind to you
And the will to see you smile and belong has now gone
It's not your birthday anymore
Did you really think we meant All those syrupy, sentimental things That we said?

3. The Radio Dept. - It's Been Eight Years
It's been eight years
I'd like to travel through time
But I can't do that
I never knew that good experiences Could cause a pain like this
I want something that I can't have

4. The Softies - My Empty Arms

5. Harold Budd With Zeitgeist - I Blink And She's Gone

Persona

Is it really important not to lie, to speak so that everything rings true? Can one live without lying and quibbling and making excuses? Isn't it better to be lazy and lax and deceitful?

The hopeless dream of being - not seeming, but being. At every waking moment, alert. The gulf between what you are with others and what you are alone. The vertigo and the constant hunger to be exposed, to be seen through, perhaps even wiped out. Every inflection and every gesture a lie, every smile a grimace. Suicide? No, too vulgar. But you can refuse to move, refuse to talk, so that you don't have to lie. You can shut yourself in. Then you needn't play any parts or make wrong gestures. Or so you thought. But reality is diabolical. Your hiding place isn't watertight. Life trickles in from the outside, and you're forced to react. No one asks if it is true or false, if you're genuine or just a sham.

Anaesthetise me... throw me away! No, I can't, I can't take any more! Leave me alone! It's shame, it's all shame! Leave me alone! I'm cold and rotten and indifferent! It's all just lies and imitation, all of it!

"The anxiety we carry with us, all our broken dreams, the inexplicable cruelty, the fear of death, the painful insight into our earthly condition...have worn out our hope of a divine salvation. The cries of our faith and doubt against the darkness and the silence are terrible proof of our loneliness and fear."

My head just got blown off by Ingmar Bergman's Persona (1966).

The story is fascinating. Images are astonishing.
This is just an astounding film, art film at its best.
I can't help posting those terrific dialogues.
Basically, just the intro blew off my mind. Absolutely amazing!
Amazing experience to watch a poetic, creepy, beautiful film!

The Lucksmiths

Now, I feel it's too late to know them.
They're disbanded, and I will see their final farewell show this Sunday.
They have been singing indie-pop for 16 years, from Melbourne.
I instantly fell in love with them when I hear their songs, full of young boys' blues, sadness, lonesomeness... in good old indie-pop tunes
I'm sure in the future, I'll pick up their music and sing along with them and remember the winter of 2009 in Brisbane, I have seen The Lucksmiths. (I hope they never take out the band website.)

No Regrets for Our Youth 1946年。

Woody - 73 - Male

To me personally, all this with people putting some kind of web page to, uh, introduce themselves to others is kinda, you know, despondent. I mean whatever happend to people going out and meeting others face to face. What, now everybody just types a few words and expect to set a date for the wedding? It's insane! But uh, don't, you know, let me discourage you from adding me as a "friend". I, uh, don't bite. You don't have to be, you know, a fan of my work. I think it would be rather interesting to see what kind of individuals there are on this electronic monstrosity.

A Brief History Of Love

The Big Pink's new album, A Brief History Of Love, drops September 14, but you can stream it free at their website now for the next week. I honestly wasn't too sure of these guys when I first heard them, but this album is incredible. Disco beat with shoegazing background sound.

Stream :: The Big Pink - A Brief History Of Love

It's so alone tonight, It's so alone tonight

As you leave me
It's up to you to let me your heart, don't let go
And as you leave me
You're in my heart to feel true love
And it won't let go

Baby, we gave our all but it's never enough
So alone tonight, so long tonight...

Annie Hall

[first lines]
Alvy Singer: ... the other important joke, for me, is one that's usually attributed to Groucho Marx; but, I think it appears originally in Freud's "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious," and it goes like this - I'm paraphrasing - um, "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member." That's the key joke of my adult life, in terms of my relationships with women.

[Alvy addresses a pair of strangers on the street]
Alvy Singer: Here, you look like a very happy couple, um, are you?
Female street stranger: Yeah.
Alvy Singer: Yeah? So, so, how do you account for it?
Female street stranger: Uh, I'm very shallow and empty and I have no ideas and nothing interesting to say.
Male street stranger: And I'm exactly the same way.
Alvy Singer: I see. Wow. That's very interesting. So you've managed to work out something?

Alvy Singer: It's mental masturbation!
Annie Hall: And you would know all about THAT, wouldn't you?
Alvy Singer: Hey, don't knock masturbation! It's sex with someone I love.

Alvy Singer: I feel that life is divided into the horrible and the miserable. That's the two categories. The horrible are like, I don't know, terminal cases, you know, and blind people, crippled. I don't know how they get through life. It's amazing to me. And the miserable is everyone else. So you should be thankful that you're miserable, because that's very lucky, to be miserable.

Pam: Sex with you is really a Kafka-esque experience.
Alvy Singer: Oh. Thank you.
Pam: I mean that as a compliment.

Duane: Can I confess something? I tell you this as an artist,I think you'll understand. Sometimes when I'm driving... on the road at night... I see two headlights coming toward me. Fast. I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on into the oncoming car. I can anticipate the explosion. The sound of shattering glass. The... flames rising out of the flowing gasoline.
Alvy Singer: Right. Well, I have to - I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

Alvy Singer: You know, I don't think I could take a mellow evening because I - I don't respond well to mellow. You know what I mean? I have a tendency to - if I get too mellow, I - I ripen and then rot, you know.

[In California]
Annie Hall: It's so clean out here.
Alvy Singer: That's because they don't throw their garbage away, they turn it into television shows.

Alvy Singer: Sun is bad for you. Everything our parents said was good is bad. Sun, milk, red meat... college.

Annie Hall: Alvy, you're incapable of enjoying life, you know that? I mean you're like New York City. You're just this person. You're like this island unto yourself.
Alvy Singer: I can't enjoy anything unless everybody is. If one guy is starving someplace, that puts a crimp in my evening.

[last lines]
Alvy Singer: [narrating] After that it got pretty late, and we both had to go, but it was great seeing Annie again. I... I realized what a terrific person she was, and... and how much fun it was just knowing her; and I... I, I thought of that old joke, y'know, the, this... this guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, uh, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." And, uh, the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs." Well, I guess that's pretty much now how I feel about relationships; y'know, they're totally irrational, and crazy, and absurd, and... but, uh, I guess we keep goin' through it because, uh, most of us... need the eggs.
It's time to tell the truth
These things have to be faced
My fuse is burning out

The Graduate (1967)

Oh, Mrs. Robinson...
Jesus loves you more than you will know!

Today, I finally see The Graduate. It's a great great film.
I think I found another me in this film.
I love this movie so much.

I also saw an interview with the novel writer, Charles Webb.
Benjamin is like the writer himself, a shy and humble guy.
I really like the writer from his interview and the story.
He said The Graduate really reflects what many people think at the time, he just happened to be the person who put that kind of direction-less feelings into some form, such as an novel. While Mike Nichols put it into the movie and made it big.

Boys Don't Cry

Boys Don't Cry (1999)
This is such a powerful and disturbing film. Very sad.
Hilary Swank looks just like a boy, a pretty boy.
But what she did for the film, was remarkable.
I first saw her in Million Dollar Baby, she's great in both films.
Sadly, it doesn't play The Cure's Boys Don't Cry.
Instead, it shows a cover version of the song, so...

Sloth Scamper - When You Sleep (MBV Cover)

I was there. When the guitar came out, I was literally thrilled. How did I feel that way? I do not know. You won't feel that way watching this. That's what I love about live music. Thanks, Allen.

Hyakkei

The Dying Animal

The Dying Animal (2001) is a short novel by Philip Roth.
I think this book is so well written.
Not a classic book, but a very good read.
Saw Elegy before I read it, I think movie did a good job too.
But I like the book better...

Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity. - W.B Yeats (source)

Tricky - Veronika

Listen and get hypnotised by the power of trip-hop。

Three Good Movies

The Boat That Rocked (2009)
really enjoyable movie, great great music of the 60's era.
too much movie clichés in this film, it could be a really good film, but it's not.
however i was entertained by the music...
I think Philip Seymour Hoffman is really cool, I wonder what kind of music he listens to...

Adventureland (2009)
I didn't expect much from this film, but it surprised me.
the music is by Yo La Tengo. in the film, there're so so many good music. Lou Reed, JAMC, The Velvet Underground, The Cure, Big Star... just so many good music.
it's not so much of a comedy, more like a reality romance with great great soundtrack.
ending sucks, but i'm okay with that. life is about the experiences, so as the movies.
I felt very happy listening to many great songs I love as the movie progressed.

Up (2009)
well... just go watch it.
such a touching and entertaining film!
Pixar, you've done it again!
