Atomised

Based on Michel Houellebecq's controversial novel, this movie focuses on Michael and Bruno, two very different half-brothers and their disturbed sexuality. After a chaotic childhood with a hippie mother only caring for her affairs, Michael, a molecular biologist, is more interested in genes than women, while Bruno is obsessed with his sexual desires, but mostly finds his satisfaction with prostitutes. His pitiful life changes when he gets to know the experienced Christiane. In the meantime, Michael meets Annabelle, the love of his youth, again...

I think this is a good film. At least better than I expected. It's a bizarre love story confronting issues such as, relationship, sex, fantasies and true love. All adults have some problems, because of the society we are living in. It's interesting to look at other people's lives. The director, Oskar Roehler, did a good job in my opinion. Some images are beautiful. The soundtrack is good, used songs from T-Rex and Bob Dylan. The story is great. But apparently the book is much better than the film. I hope I can check out the book sometime.

Elephants

Just when Rachael Yamagata released her newest album Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart, I just played the Elephants (first part of the album) all the time. The mood was perfect, so as the lyrics. Just haunting how sad love is. Now listen again, it's moves me even more.

So for those of you falling in love,
keep it kind, keep it good, keep it right.
Throw yourself in the midst of danger, but keep one eye open at night.

Oh and sometimes in my dreams I hear you say,
"If you really care you won't go away"
What if I leave...

I'm not gonna live for you or die for you
won't do anything anymore for you
cause you leave me here on the other side

But I remember what we said as we lay down to bed
I'll forgive you oh if you just come back home

I really thought I was okay.
I really thought I was just fine,
But when I woke this time,
There was nothing to take me back to sleep, to take you off my mind

School Of Seven Bells / Sherlock's Daughter @ the Zoo Fri Apr 24

Firstly, Sydney quintet Sherlock’s Daughter manage to gain spirited and vocal applause despite audience members still trickling in at this stage of the night. Although no carbon copy of the headliners, they are a perfect support act for this evening, as they create a dreamy pop soundscape crammed with electronica, intuitive drumming, echo-drenched guitars and fine vocals from front woman Tanya (at times boosted further when blended with some imaginative group harmonies). Song For Old People proves a true set highlight, as the band intrigue their audience with a sound that veers effortlessly from Ride to Neu! and beyond.
Their performance really took me by surprises. They were good.
Their music is good.
Benjamin Curtis
Claudia
Alejandra
Tonight, the haunting effect of the sisters’ vocals is particularly magnificent in the echoed harmonies of Wired For Light, but the group’s crowning dream pop moment remains the heavenly single Half Asleep, delivered here with all its seductive sonic flow intact. However, the luxurious Connjur proves a close runner-up. The group’s presence is low-key but quietly intriguing, as Benjamin and Alejandra trade heady Kevin Shields-via-Robin Guthrie guitar licks, while Claudia is a serene, cool presence behind the synth. Much of the music is programmed, leaving the guitars and vocals to provide the human element. (from Rave Mag)
I guess I didn't enjoy that much after realising that they used programmed machine drums. Though the twins did sing very well together and Benjamin's guitar was terrific, I still feel they could be better. I was standing right in the middle, there's no way I could take a photo of them all together.

Almost Famous

This film gave me so so so much. Definitely one of my favourites.

I love everything about the film. It's hard for me to explain.
When you love someone or something so much, it's hard to name everything you love about of them. I mean, it's not hard to name but you just can not name EVERYTHING, because you'll always miss out some of them.
Well, that's what happens to me.
So, instead of talking about it. I'll just say I love it very much.
I'm a fan of this film.

What a magical scene!

Sight of You

Sight of You
Pale Saints - (1990) The Comforts of Madness

the sight of you
the sight of you
makes me feel blue
makes me feel blue
the things you said
the things you said
make me feel bad
my heart is sad

i think of him
i think of him
soaked all in red
i wish him dead
you say that he
you say that he's
nothing like me
but how can that be?

what can i do?
what can i say?
the world was large
and i felt very small
what's gonna happen?
how will i know
when things are back
the way they used to be before?

the sight of you
the sight of you
makes me feel blue
i feel so blue
the things you said
the things you said
make me feel bad
my heart is sad

Self-Hatred

Today's consumerism is everything.
Everything based on our choices.
We can easily imitate people we want to be which simply based on consumerism.
This banality of society uses to impose uniformity in taste.
Narcissism carried to excess.
People always want to be the ones who they think are better.
Primordial narcissism has now transformed into a neurotic and media-hyped narcissism and becomes self-hatred.
Yet, that's all we do. We consume everything we want, and hate ourselves.

Sambassadeur

Another indie-pop band from Labrador, Sweden.
They just sound very nice, very pop.
So far, had released two albums, Sambassadeur and Migration.
I think both sound very good, but you can tell that they are better in the second album, Migration. Full of good pop sounds, especially covered a song, called Lady (Falling In Love) originally by Dennis Wilson from The Beach Boys.
Myspace

songs I will always like:
  1. final say
  2. subtle changes
  3. falling in love
  4. new moon
  5. between the lines
  6. just because of you

Masculin Féminin: 15 faits précis

Paul: Kill a man and you're a murderer. Kill thousands and you're a conqueror. Kill everyone and you're a god.
Elisabeth: I don't think God exists.
We control our thoughts which mean nothing, and not our emotions which mean everything.
Paul: To have a conscience is to be open to the world.
Paul: To be faithful is to act as if time didn't exist.
Paul: Wisdom would be to see life, truly see it. That would be wisdom.
Masculin Féminin, by Godard. Awesome film!
From this film, I see insanity of modern society.
Even this is a quite funny film, it's got a hell of insights.

I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day

Julie Doiron
The Life Of Dreams,Nice To Come Home,Glad To Be Alive,都是只有簡單的吉他伴奏,Julie 直接對著"你"唱的方式,很親密。

2001: A Space Odyssey

另外兩部是A Clockwork Orange (1971)和 Full Metal Jacket (1987)。

2001: A Space Odyssey with Pink Floyd

I'm Not There

what a sensational film!

I've already seen this film last year in the cinema. Back then, I knew nothing about Dylan except for knowing that he was famous in rock music. So, as I was watching the film, I was just confused about what the film was all about. They just seemed very strange and crazy to me. I guess it does for a lot of people, even for Dylan's fans, and I'm not a Dylan fan. Towards the end of the film, I finally realised that Bob Dylan was divided and embodied into six frictional characters. At that point, I thought to myself "what a great idea!" Too bad that I've already missed too many details in the film.
I wake and I'm one person, when I go to sleep I know for certain I'm somebody else. I don't know who I am most of the time.
So a year later, I listen to more music, watch more films and know a bit more about Bob Dylan from the music course I took. I borrowed the movie and watched again, twice actually. I watched the film again with director's commentary right after. It grew on me when I watched again. I think it's interesting to get more insides of the films that I like.
People actually think I have some kind of a fantastic imagination. It gets very lonesome.
This film really challenged people, unlike conventional biopic movies. Just like what Bob Dylan did going electric from folk. The concept is perfect. The film touches so many aspects of Dylan's (our) life on love, religion, politics, family, friends, status quo, and a lot more. As for a complex man like him, I think the film covered the most it could. Among the star casts, I was fond of Charlotte Gainsbourg's role. She was special in this film. I also like Ben Whishaw's role very much. After all, every actors were all great, making this film a masterpiece.
I accept chaos. I don't know whether it accepts me.
But what really differentiated this film from the rests, is the way the film represented. Director Todd Haynes really had a vision and did a wonderful job. I would said it is an experimental film, yet a very good experimental film. He played around a lot with movie techiques and these techiques were not new. He really took some influences from Godard and Fellini, and just threw them into the film. The film at first may seemed chaotic, but it's actually not, just excessive. It carried too many ideas and stories. For me, this is not just a tribute to Dylan's life and music, but also to other great directors and poets.
It's like you got yesterday, today and tomorrow, all in the same room. There's no telling what can happen.
Seven simple rules of going into hiding:
  1. never trust a cop in a raincoat.
  2. beware of enthusiasm and of love, both are temporary and quick to sway.
  3. if asked if you care about the world's problems, look deep into the eyes of he who asks, he will never ask you again.
  4. never give your real name.
  5. if ever asked to look at yourself, don't.
  6. never do anything the person standing in front of you cannot understand.
  7. never create anything, it will be misinterpreted, it will chain you and follow you for the rest of your life.

Sonic Youth - I'm Not There

Unsettled

Slow Show by The National

Standing at the punch table swallowing punch
can’t pay attention to the sound of anyone
a little more stupid, a little more scared
every minute more unprepared

I made a mistake in my life today
everything I love gets lost in drawers
I want to start over, I want to be winning
way out of sync from the beginning

I wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I’m very, very frightening
I’ll overdo it

Looking for somewhere to stand and stay
I leaned on the wall and the wall leaned away
Can I get a minute of not being nervous
and not thinking of my dick
My leg is sparkles, my leg is pins
I better get my shit together, better gather my shit in
You could drive a car through my head in five minutes
from one side of it to the other

I wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I’m very, very frightening
I’ll overdo it

You know I dreamed about you
for twenty-nine years before I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for
for twenty-nine years

A Distance Shore

今天我去二手唱片行,賣了 The Liars 和 Joanna Newsom 兩張專輯,在加了一些錢買了這張 Tracey Thorn 的 A Distance Shore。

How would you sum up the mood of 'A Distant Shore'?

"Quite thoughtful I suppose. People say they relax to it but I can't relax to it at all. I play it and it puts me all on edge! The music is relaxing but the lyrics certainly aren't. I'd hate it to be thought of as background music."

Speaking generally, everything that you've put out has been well received by the media. How much do good reviews mean to you personally? Do you think they help 'validate' what you've done?

"Clearly, if you are writing personal songs, it's very important to have people reassure you and day it's worthwhile and you're not just writing indulgent, sentimental love songs.

"Someone told me that the Marine Girls' 'On My Mind' made them cry. That was incredible. The opinions of friends are as worthy as reviewers. I would hate to be acclaimed just on a critical basis. I like to think the songs can mean something to people on personal terms rather than how well played or produced they are."

Small Town Girl

Some things are better left unsaid
Feelings can get left behind
So keep your love and I'll keep mine

Simply Couldn't Care

Why do these things bother me so
Why do I lie awake so long after you go
Arguments just prove we're not the same
We'll end up talking to ourselves
And it seems a shame

Sure that you know but you never can tell
When I think I understand you so well
Shakes me that you were a constant surprise
Or so you appear in my eyes

Too Happy

Slam by Nick Hornby

I found this book extremely funny and entertaining.
I always like Nick Hornby's humour in his books.
Especially the imaginary conversations with a poster of Tony Hawk.
So funny...

Four Movies, Three Actors

> Somersault
> Director, Cate Shortland's Debut
> Starring : Abbie Cornish
> This film has to be one of the most beautiful film I've seen. Cinematography is really good.
> I think the story is nothing spectacular
> When she left Canberra, on the bus, it reminds me of so much of last time when i was there on my way to the airport. Australia is a beautiful place. Jindabyne seems like a really good place. I wish I could go there sometime.
> Comparing to candy, Heidi is a more acceptable role. Still both are pretty mess-up roles.
> The music is quite good.

> Candy
> Starring: Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish
> Directed by Neil Armfield
> Both actors are great in this film. I think the complexity of the film gave them a lot of room to act out
> To be honest, I felt extremely sad while I was watching, it's just so sad, and so realistic.
> Yes, more is never enough
> And life is always tough
> Finally, don't do drugs.

> 10 Things I Hate About You
> Starring: Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles
> Commercial movie but in a different level, at the level with a bit of depth, unlike most teen school movies
> I enjoy the film, because I can relate to it quite easily
> It's funny, sometimes.
> I don't really like the music, riot grrrl....
> Heath played a great role
> In contrast, Joseph played a unspectacular role. In mysterious skin, he gave an amazing performance. I think it might be the problem of the film itself, this is a teenage commercial film.

> Mysterious Skin
> Directed by Gregg Araki
> Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
> The music is horrifyingly good, very well suited to the movie, a sad fucked-up teenage movie
> Featuring Slowdive, Ride, Cocteau Twins, Sigur Ros
> I like the ending-scene very much... with the music, words, and camera pulling out.
> Favourite line: And I thought of all the grief and suffering and fucked up stuff in the world, and it made me want to escape. I wished with all my heart we could just leave this world behind. Rise like two angels in the night and magically disappear.
